First Time's A Charm

The saying goes "Third time's a charm", but for Boulder City Motocross, first time was the charm. This was the first race that BCMX has hosted under the M.R.A.N. auspices. The "1st Annual Boulder City Motocross Gran Prix" came off practically without a hitch thanks to all the hard work put in by the great crew to put it all together. Talking to the "First Lady" of BCMX before the race she seemed a BIT nervous, but after a little while I'm sure her jitters eased some.

One small mishap actually worked out to my advantage. They accidentally cut the 50cc race short, so they ran it again later to it's full length. Which allowed me to get some more pics of these very fun to watch racers. I actually think that this is the most entertaining race of them all to watch. I think a lot of people agreed.

BCMX came up with the idea of giving out 8 X 10 photos to the winner of the holeshot in each class as "Holeshot Awards". Which I think was a great idea. ;) ;)  I think  I got some really good shots. So to said winners, be looking forward to some good photos like this one.

Now That's Close !!!

I'd like to give a special shout out to #22s Steve Hausman. He pulled in right after I did & parked next to me. I mentioned that the "Holeshot Awards" were going to be photos of the holeshot and he said to keep an eye on him because he has been getting or coming really close to getting the holeshot in every race. Sure enough, when he came around, there he was getting the holeshot !!! He ended up winning his first class race in his first year in MRAN. Not too bad for the youngster. I'd also like to congratulate him on his new baby !!!

Once again the club putting on the race did an outstanding job getting everything together. Including whoever was doing the scoring. I see that the results have been up on the MRAN website for a little while already! Nicholle, Bob and all the people out at Boulder City MX really worked hard to make this race a success, which I think it was a tremendous one. Oh, but there was one slacker working at the race that I caught goofing off....

I want to thank everybody that turned out for this great race & thank the management of BCMX for letting me out on the track to get the pictures of these awesome and dedicated riders. Finally I want to thank all those who made it all possible, "The Heroes" !!!!!!

     Practicing For The World.....

Practicing for the "World Minis" that is. With the National Motosport Association's (NMA) "World Minis" in Las Vegas the week of April 13, a lot of racers came to town early to get a little bit of practice in before the big event. There were quite a few of the bigger names that showed up at Boulder City MX to do just that.

Awesome Riders + Awesome Track = Awesome Pictures
Up & Coming Fellow Ohioan Justin Weeks

Nicholle, Bob and all of the great crew at BCMX had the track in superb condition for all of the riders from around the country that were here in the Vegas area for the "World Minis". I was really impressed with the soil that made up the track. There were multiple lines & berms in almost every corner !! I asked the owner Nicholle about the soil and she said that there were a few different types that had been brought in including clay, which helps make them cool berms. The crew had the track dug deep and watered like crazy with the result being hardly any dust all day. With just a few waterings needed throughout the sessions to keep it like that.

I really have to commend a lot  the racers and their families for all they go through so that the kids can try to follow their dream of being motocross champions. There's many sacrifices to be made along the way. A lot of these riders travel all over the country with their families to follow that dream. Unless the parents are fairly wealthy, I'm sure one of them has to keep a full time job & they have to plan their vacations around the big events like the World Minis, Ponca City & Loretta Lynn's. Motocross is definitely a family sport.

Boulder City Motocross just re-opened this past March and if these practice sessions are any indication of what's in store, it should be an awful lot of fun for everybody out there. They will be hosting a M.R.A.N. GP race on Saturday April 25. If you would like more info on this race please visit M.R.A.N.'s website here. Or if you would like information about Boulder City MX you can visit them here.

Jumpin' For Joy ?
Jumpin' For Joy ?

With only a few permanent motocross tracks within a hundred miles or so from Las Vegas (Mesquite MX Park, Sandy Valley Motocross and Boulder City MX) we need to support them all or we could lose some !!!  By writing these little articles with my pictures I hope that I can get one or two new people to check out these tracks. Kinda trying to give back a little to the best sport out there.

Spring Time, Race Time, SVMX Time

Going to Sandy Valley Motocross for one of their day races is always a lot of fun for me. So I was really looking forward to getting out there for this race & seeing the new longer layout. The new design has a split section with a nice double jump that sends the riders way up into the air that makes for some great pictures. There are some big berms that also make for some cool shots if hit just right.

The picture you see below may be among some of the last of the youngsters racing if Congress  doesn't make some changes to the law just recently passed that bans children's dirt bikes and their parts. I encourage everybody to PLEASE visit these websites to put your voice in to help do something to remedy this situation. www.tomself.com   and  www.arra-access.com

Every once in a while there's somebody that will do an awesome scrub on this step-up (or whatever it's called). You just kind of stand and watch in amazement at what they do.

As I've come to expect from Clark, Kit & the whole gang out at Sandy Valley MX when it comes to getting a track prepped for a race, these guys are #1 !!!   Coming down the road to SVMX it's an awesome sight with the sun just rising, revealing the dark wet soil with the sprinklers going, just waiting for a bunch of racers to rip it to shreds !!! Sights like that are, I think, one of the reasons why I love motocross so much.

If you haven't been out to SVMX lately, now is an excellent time to check it out with the new layout. There are, as of this writing, still three rounds of the "Spring Series" still to go. So if your not chasing points & want to check out a great track, now is the time. This is a top notch facility with a friendly and fun crowd just waiting for you to come & have a good time with them. M.R.A.N.'S   L.O.D   B.C.M.X.G.P.

Once again it was time for the Lords of Dirt "Legendary Boulder City MX/GP" at the old Boulder City Motocross Track. The LOD put on a great event every time I'm there, so I always try to make it out for one of the days of their events. I like their GP events so I can get the mx style shots and still get the desert type ones too. Plus the one hour races are pretty nice (as long as I'm not racing).

As usual the Lords of Dirt and all the volunteers did a tremendous job with the track and the race overall. They watered the MX section the best they could & it really did help keep the dust down. But sometimes the dust & dirt make for some interesting pictures.

Awesome Desert Racing

I get such a kick watching the little tikes out on a track like this one. It's definitely not your usual pee-wee track. But I think they have the most fun out of all of us....

Kidz a Kruzin'

Some of the scenery makes great backgrounds for the shots out in Boulder City Nevada, as long as there's no sandstorms like the Santa Clauz GP. At least for this race the wind co-operated for the most part, making life a little easier for the "Lords of Dirt" and the racers. Oh yeah, easier on the photographers too.

MRAN at Mesquite

I had been out to Mesquite MX before so I was really looking forward to my trip there for the MRAN GP series race. I really like their MX track setup, so I was eager to see what was in store for the GP section. I wasn't disappointed, their GP setup was really good. Part of it was a man-made rock & log section that looked pretty wild!! I didn't get to walk the whole track, I only saw the MX area and the section back around the cow field by the river. That sand section near the river sure looked like a lot of fun though!!

Down By The River

Mesquite MX Park is definitely a first class facility so I knew that the Ellis' would have the place ready to go. If you didn't make it out to Mesquite for either of the weekend events, make sure you make it out to the next one, I don't think you'll regret it !!

Young One Havin' Fun !!!
Young One Havin' Fun !!!

I think the little ones enjoyed the day more than anybody else did. I know that they are usually the most fun to watch for me. I'll bet some of them were a little intimidated by the hilly section. If that was me at 5 -7 years old, I know that I would be.
There was always a bunch of parents hanging out at the one curve at the bottom of the hill to help all the ones who needed it. And there were quite a few who did.

The scenery around the Mesquite area is really something. All the high snow capped mountains are awesome and make for some cool looking pictures too.

Awesome Mesquite Scenery

On my way down the road coming back from the sandy area along the river the people at one of the shooting ranges fired into the hillside above my head showering me with dirt & pebbles. A few seconds later two shots hit the dirt mound on the other side of me again showering me with rocks & dirt. I definitely walked a little more briskly after that. Every time I heard another shot I was almost a little relieved because I kept thinking of that saying that "you never hear the one that gets you". Pretty weird feeling knowing that bullets were hitting just ten feet from you !!!

Majestic Mesquite

I would like to commend Jason Ellis & the whole crew at Mesquite MX for doing such a fine job with their first MRAN race and thank him for letting us photographers get these great pictures of these great racers !!!
If you would like more info on Mesquite MX Park please visit their website here: http://mesquitemx.com  As I mentioned earlier if you haven't been out to Mesquite MX Park keep an eye out for the next race there and put it on your schedule, i think you'll really enjoy it....

Lords Of Dirt
Boulder City/Santa Clauz Mini Grand Prix

The (first annual ???) "Lords of Dirt" Santa Clauz Mini Grand Prix was held during a late fall storm at the old Boulder City mx track this year on December 13, 2008. Not a snow storm but a freaking sand storm !!! But it was still an awful lot of fun watching those hardy riders do their thing under such circumstances.

Man-Made Sand Storm

This next picture is one you have to check out !!!  It's a panorama of the "Billy McDaniel Memorial Hot Lap" that occurred right after the mini's ran their races !!! You have to click on the picture to take you to a LARGE sized version so you can really check it out !!!

Billy McDaniel Memorial Hot Lap

The guys from the club tried their best to keep the track in decent shape, watering it in between each race. But mother nature had other plans. She decided it was a perfect time for a sand/dust storm, so it didn't really matter how much you watered. It was still dusty & windy as hell.

I want to compliment the people from the "Lords of Dirt Motorcycle Club" for doing a killer job on this race. I was told that they didn't have many helpers for this event. So that makes it all the better !!! This was the third race of theirs' out at the "old" Boulder City motocross track, each time I enjoyed it & I keep coming back for more. This time will be no different !!!

At the entrance the members were collecting toys for the United States Marine Corp's "Toys For Tots" campaign which gives toys to underprivileged children that might not get any during the holiday season. Definitely one of the better charities out there, run by some of America's Heros.

I'm looking forward to the 2009 grand prix at the "old" Boulder City motocross track. Not sure when it's going to be, but you should be able to find out when it is by going here: http://mranracing.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl  It's the MRAN (Motorcycle Racing Association of Nevada) website forum.
